SummerTyne Day 3!

For much of Day 3 I was off interviewing artists but I still got to soak up the festival atmosphere as I had more of the great street food on offer and tried the special ales put on for the festival whilst I sat outside with my family in the sun listening to some great bands including the CD Wallum Trio. I was particularly impressed by Georgie who played the concourse stage at 1pm, her lyrics were great and she seemed to have this stage presence that was endearing to the audience which was already quite large despite a full day looming ahead. We stuck around to catch the Pop up Country choir and heard them sing classics like Jolene, Country Roads and Wichita Lineman. My favourite act by far

Day 2 at SummerTyne Americana!

Day 2 of SummerTyne started off at the Concourse stage for me at 1pm when Melanie Greggain and her band took to the stage. A large crowd had gathered round and more mooched around outside in the sun which had put in an appearance! Some of you may remember Mel as being one half of the Country duo Luke and Mel who did great things in the UK Country scene but out on her own now Mel is still writing fantastic songs and taking a laid back approach to gigging and it seems to be serving her well as she beamed throughout her performance, enjoying the moment. She performed her debut single as a solo artist Ready To Run and Save It which is on her EP. This proved popular amongst the crowd as people qu

Day 1 at SummerTyne Americana 2018

SummerTyne Americana Festival started off rather soggy this year as the heavens opened chasing everyone, artists and fans, inside. The indoor Concourse stage which wasn’t supposed to kick off until 6pm hosted the artists that should have been on the Jumping Hot Stage situated outside. It was a testament to the great organisational skills of the staff at Sage who got everything swiftly reorganised and running smoothly without much, if any, delay to the schedule. There was a large crowd throughout the day and a number of acts stood out for me. The Gem Andrews Band, a local group, impressed me with their arrangement and use of harmonies (and their western shirts were quite nice too!) Charley Cr

Striking Matches talk about their last two EPs and their plans for the year ahead!

One of the highlights for me at Black Deer was Striking Matches a duo who I've been a fan of for a number of years now. I've seen them play live countless times both here and in the States and every time they amaze me because every time they get better and better. Their latest two EPs are quite different from their first album, and the sound they're creating suits the festival circuit to a T. They're a duo who is constantly evolving and trying to impress their fans and on this occasion they certainly did, not only with their guitar skills that are out of this World but with the addition of percussion instruments played with their feet. It is always lovely to catch up with Sarah and Justin bu

Sonia Leigh discusses her latest record "Sonia Leigh and Friends Live in London"

One of the highlights of Black Deer Fest this year was seeing Sonia Leigh steal the show on the Friday. With two very different performances, one in a writers round and the other a full band headline set on the supajam stage, many came away with a new favourite artist! We knew this was going to happen of course having felt the same way a few years ago when we first heard Sonia at C2C. Her new record Live in London captures the energy Sonia puts in to her shows and we were eager to catch up with her to find out more about the making of that record which she recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. So the new record Sonia Leigh and Friends Live in London is out now, how did you choose the

Sam Palladio talks about his upcoming debut album!

First of all, you’re well known for playing a songwriter in the programme Nashville but how have you found the transition from being an actor into releasing your own music? It’s a really nice transition, music has been a part of my life since I was tiny, I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember. To have been lucky enough to have been on the show Nashville has given me this fantastic platform to write music, to create music with some of the most talented songwriters in the World. I’m just really lucky and blessed to have spent these past six years in Nashville and to have forming this great group of friends and now to bring the music back to the UK is invigorating. And did you wa

The biggest Americana stars are set to appear at The Sage Gateshead!

Summertyne Americana Festival is unlike any other festival out there today. Last year was my first year and I was greeted by friendly staff and a stellar line up of talent, some of whom had flown under my radar but they blew me away after the three days. Set in and around Sage Gateshead the festival uses both of the Halls - Sage One and Sage Two as well as a stage in the cafe area and on the concourse outside. Furthermore, and a highlight of the Festival for me last year was the river cruise where some of the top artists entertain a boat full of people as it travels up and down the Tyne. Last year one of those artists was Ashley Campbell who went down a treat! This year boasts another fantas
