Kip Moore's Slowheart Album Review!
Hello!
Kip Moore has just released his third studio album. Moore shot to fame when his debut album peaked at number 3 on the US Country charts and became the best selling debut album from a male singer in 2012/13. His single Something Bout A Truck also took the number 1 spot in the Hot Country Songs Chart however he has consistently been overlooked at award shows and by Country Radio. This latest album though is perhaps Kip’s most interesting record to date. With co-writing credits on 11 out of 13 tracks it shows Moore’s consistency as a writer and sonically it captures the energy Kip displays in his live performances.
The album opens with the very upbeat Plead The Fifth, the chorus features a very catchy melody and some clever lyrics. The electric guitars drive the song and give it a slightly 80’s rock feel. The vibe of Just Another Girl reminds me a little of Kid Rock’s All Summer Long and I’ve Been Around focuses on Kip’s experiences touring and being on the road, once again it is quite upbeat, the lyrics are simple but to the point. Fast Women begins slightly slower and I like the storytelling and the details in the first verse but I’m not exactly sure what the song’s intention is using the term Fast Women. Bittersweet Company has quite a long intro again driven by electric guitars, it’s a song reminiscing falling in love with someone and wondering how it went wrong. It has a catchy chorus.
One of my favourite songs off this record is More Girls Like You the first single off the record. It only peaked at number 8 on Country Airplay charts which is a shame as I do really like this song, it has a nice light hearted theme to it. But it’s this next song that I like the best lyrically and melodically. The foot stomping chorus of The Bull is really going to be the highlight of Kip’s live sets I think. Blonde follows and it is a lot slower and stripped back and is a nice refreshing change of pace. Try Again gives off a slightly Motown vibe as he sings “To the moon and back, Through the highs and lows, To win your love, girl just know, I’ll try, try, try, then I’ll try again.” Guitar Man has been a highlight of Kip Moore’s live sets for quite some time now, it is a wonderful way to close the album and perhaps the highlight of the record for me. It’s quite different from the rest of the record though as it is very stripped back, the production is very sparse which makes it quite beautiful.
All in all I think this record is Kip Moore’s best yet. It is very much his own record and he has had the creative freedom to explore and do what he wants with this album, he’s written 11 out of 13 songs on this record and co-produced the album. It’s going to be fantastic live as the whole album is full of energy. And don’t forget Kip Moore will soon be embarking on his UK tour and those dates are listed below.
